Noddy was the result of a very close friendship with Rob Broom. While playing with bands like Ganges, Harlem, Erasmus etc., Rob would come out the the shows with his friends Carl Lormand and Paul Morasse (later to join Moondog)and be an active part of the audience.
My girlfriend at the time--Diane Brown--introduced me to Rob at a party and we got to talking about music. I learned that he played guitar too, and we jammed in a rather drunken state at Diane's one Saturday evening in 1972.
We both had a need and desire to write our own songs--I had already written a few that had been played by the bands I was in, but hadn't really attempted anything in an acoustic flavor as yet. Rob had a real talent for poetry and we began making some tunes together--calling it Nodd, or Noddy--depending on our mood. Rob was really into the whole British culture thing and was intrigued by the cartoon character Noddy….
Over the years since, we have written and recorded countless songs and although we get together less frequently these days, this is one project that has an ongoing "open-end" to it. We can be away from each other for a year at a time and still sit down and write a tune together like it was 1973 again.
Over the years we would occasionally perform live as a duo or with other musicians, but mainly it was the two of us working toward some greater goal.
Members over the years have included Peter Stainton, Carl Lormand, Rick Broom, Lee Smith, Gord Emmott, Tom Evans.
Most recently in August 2001, Rob and I re-recorded one of our first songs we played together "Rose of Genesis Tale" that will be included on the next Mongoose CD.
